Chapter 34

Ajumbled mass of shining black rocks jutted out of the ocean and waves threw themselves with violent abandon onto a shoreline littered with the corpses of ships and debris. Ordes squeezed the small boat in between the wreck of The Lady’s Breath, the lettering on the side of the craft still visible but almost worn away with age, and what he realised too late was a pile of bones, bleached white from the weather.

‘Fucking syhrens,’ Kat mumbled, scowling at the bones.

‘I didn’t think you’d be worried,’ Ordes mused as she jumped out and stood with her hands on her hips. She glared at him as he hauled the boat as high as he could, trying to avoid stepping on any bones.

‘I’ll have you know,’ Katarin began, ‘I only hunt those who deserve to die a miserable death, and,’ she said fiercely, before Ordes could interrupt, ‘I send them to sleep before letting them sink to a watery grave.’

‘Who decides who gets to die?’ he asked her, narrowing his eyes against the sharp bite of the wind.

Katarin checked her weapons were in place. ‘My crew. Those we target are men who’ve committed crimes against women. Why do you think we spend so much time in the towns, Ordes? We’re collecting information. Taverns are the best place for such talk, you’d know that. It’s one of the ways we learn about where and when a Magic Wielder will die.’

‘I wasn’t judging, Kat,’ he said quietly.

She gave him a curt nod, and turned away. ‘Are you sure about this?’

There was nothing on the island except rocks and bones. No buildings, not a syhren or anything fey to be seen. Ordes swallowed uneasily. ‘I’m sure,’ he said. ‘Jen is here somewhere.’

‘Yes, your destiny, or whatever you want to call it,’ Katarin said.

‘I didn’t ask for it, and neither did she,’ Ordes said simply.

The Captain of The Night Queen gave him an interested look. ‘Did you know, though? When you first met her? Love at first sight and all that?’

‘Not exactly,’ Ordes answered, sighing. ‘I’m not—’

‘If you’re about to say you’re not in love with her I might punch you in the face, Ordes,’ Katarin said, rolling her eyes. ‘Because if you’re truly not, what are we doing here?’

He said nothing.

Katarin grinned. ‘Come on then, lover boy. Let’s go and find her. Do you think Melodias has a door somewhere we can knock on?’

‘There’s meant to be a portal,’ Ordes said. ‘At least, as far as I understand it there is. The island isn’t big – we should be able to find it.’

‘Hopefully before anything finds us,’ Katarin mumbled.

For hours, they clamoured over rocks and more heaps of bones, over pieces of ships and scattered driftwood. Jenyfer was alive, Ordes knew – he could feel it. He reached up to touch the space where his collarbones met. His fingers tingled as his mother’s magic beat against them, a steady thrumming under his skin. He shot a quick glance at Katarin, who had stopped to wipe her forehead with the back of her hand.
